A project commenced to establish a supportive network for families of missing Syrians in Kurdistan, Iraq, aiming to provide solidarity and assistance in their quest to find their loved ones. Various stages were executed to ensure the project’s success.

Outreach and Participant Selection

The project initiated by conducting outreach sessions in Erbil and Duhok provinces, engaging families interested in joining the network. Twelve individuals, representing both groups, were selected to advocate for the network and its goals.

Training and Capacity Building

Each group underwent two-day training covering missing persons’ rights, family roles, and communication techniques, essential for effective advocacy and awareness raising.

Enhanced Coordination and Promotion

Virtual coordination sessions fostered communication and experience sharing between Erbil and Duhok groups. Brochures and a promotional video were designed to raise awareness, especially amidst the constraints imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Network Expansion and Outreach

To amplify engagement, a Facebook page named ‘Syrian Missing Persons’ Families Network’ was established, sharing the promotional video. This initiative garnered remarkable attention, with the video viewed by 63,000 individuals, and 41 participants joining outreach sessions.

Achievements and Future Goals

The network, comprising 8 men and 4 women, actively participated in training and coordination sessions. The collective effort aims to extend support, raise awareness, advocate for missing persons’ rights, and pursue justice for affected families.
